OPENING FUNCTION/ PLENARY SESSIONS - 8:30 am to 12:30
The Opening Function starts with a Welcome to Wellington from Mayor Celia Wade-Brown and a message from the Chairman of Metals New Zealand. The Driving Productivity and Innovation theme will be introduced by the Hon Deputy Prime Minister Gerry Brownlee, with keynote addresses by Dr Rick Boven of the New Zealand Institute and Tony Smale from Forte Management to follow.
The Conference then splits into two plenary sessions: One for the Heavy Metals Manufacturing sector with keynote speakers John Blakey from COMPETENZ, Dr Wolfgang Scholz from HERA and Prof. Shaun Coffey from IRL and one for the Construction Industry with keynote speakers Pieter Burghout from BRANZ, Dr Stephen Hicks from HERA and Paul Brislen from TUANZ.
AFTERNOON BREAKOUT SESSIONS - 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm
The Thursday afternoon breakout sessions are organised by Conference partners:
Developing Heavy Engineering Business Opportunities and Improving Productivity (HERA)
The HERA organised sessions provides an overview on what HERA is doing to open up new business opportunities and combines this with the presentation of results of industry specific research on innovation and practical advise on improving productivity from improvements in QA, Health and Safety and Design of Welded Structures. HERA speakers Nick Inskip and Alan McClintock, Dr Karpenko and will be complemented by Innovation Researcher Fern Evitt and John Skudder from ACC. Bill James will introduce ways of significantly increasing your changes to successfully tendering and uses this as an introduction to his complimentary HERA-sponsored workshop offered on Friday.
Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ)
SCNZ follows on with a 90 minutes workshop introduced in the Opening Function by Tony Smale and then has a second structural steel fabrication specific workshop by Australian fabrication technology guru Peter Farley.
Stainless Steel (NZSSDA)
In the NZSSDA session, Dr Michail Karpenko from HERAs NZ Welding Centre updates on SS material developments in lower cost Ferritic Steel grades and on the proposed changes to the stainless steel welding standard. Les Boulton,New Zealand Consultant to the Nickel Institute, will present a paper entitledStainless Steels and Nickel Alloys in Geothermal Energy Production. The 2nd afternoon session will consist of a forum updating on New Developments in Stainless Steel.The NZSSDA-AGM will follow the afternoon session and will start at 5:00pm.
National Association of Steel Framed Housing (NASH)
NASH members are meeting up with Ken Watson from NASH Australia who reports on Australian LSF fire tests and an Australian industry benchmarking study. With Derek Baxter from the Certified Builders Association they will explore co-operation options and with Pamela Bell from Prefab NZ the benefits of maximising fabricating before moving on site for productivity advantages.The NASH AGM will be held at 5:00 pm.
Light Alloys Manufacturing (LAM-NZ)
The session programme contains a mix of papers from academia and industry alike and includes an update on the New Zealand titanium alloy industry developments.The LAM-NZ AGM will be held at 5:00 pm.

Industry Tour to IRL and BRANZ, Friday 15th April - start from hotel - 8:30am to 5:00pm (Airport)
A free industry tour to two prominent Wellington region based research providers is on offer. In the morning you will be visiting the Gracefield premises of Crown Research Institute Industrial Research Ltd and in the afternoon the Morningside facilities of Building Research will be shown. The bus will drop you straight back to the airport.
