Industry Opportunity Waterview Connection Project

Metals NZ recently hosted a presentation held at HERA House by the Well-Connected Alliance project team involved with construction of the final link in the Western Ring Route, known as the Waterview Connection.

Well-Connect ed Alliance Director John Burden provided an overview of the project which consists of 5.5 km of new motorway that will connect State Highway 16 in the west of Auckland and State Highway 20 in the south. The project includes 2.4km of twin 3 lane tunnels. The Project is scheduled to take 66 months to complete at a cost of $1.4b.

John introduced the Well-Connected Alliance consisting of NZTA, Fletcher Construction, Tonkin & Taylor, Obayashy Corporation, BECA, MacDow and Parson Brinkerhoff. He also introduced his co-speakers Construction Manager Stefan Hanke, Surface Works Construction Manager Malcolm MacDonald and Commercial Manager Phil Weston who each spoke about their areas of responsibility, providing more detailed insights into the project.

The presentations included details of the alliance arrangement, the scope of works and the opportunities for New Zealand businesses. The tunnel boring machine which is worth $60 Million is being supplied by German company Herrenknecht AG and is substantially fabricated in China. The structural steel components of the supply contracts involve around 8,800 tonnes of steel.

Many questions were asked by attendees, including questions about the decision to use concrete in bridges rather than steel and the use of imported steelwork, both of which were asked by Metals NZ Chairman Noel Davies.

HERA Industry Development Manager, Nick Inskip, said that the use of the term Well Connected Alliance throughout the presentation was particularly interesting, because Metals New Zealand was also a Well Connected Alliance and he hoped that this event was the beginning of a strong association between the two.

Noel Davies thanked the Alliance project team and said the event was the first of many planned by Metals NZ.

Following the presentation, there was a networking opportunity for people attending, to talk, one-on-one with the project team and the feedback received was overwhelmingly positive, with many comments regarding the value of such events. You can download the presentation from HERE.
