Non-Conforming Reinforcing Steel Products

This subject has received a lot of press since March/April as a result of the Ductile Reinforcing Mesh investigations by the Commerce Commission. Whilst the investigations are still ongoing, it would seem highly likely that the assurance framework will be strengthened for products involved in at least those deemed ‘critical applications’.

No formal research has been done in NZ in attempt to quantify the extent of building product non- conformance as has been done in Australia. On May 10th the Australian parliamentary senate enquiry report into non-conforming products will be released.

The Australian concern for the extent of non-compliant building products and the subsequent formal investigations are running well ahead of any such activity in NZ and so there should be high interest here in what the inquiry has uncovered and what the Policy and Regulator(s) response there will be.
